TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a 30-hour unilateral ceasefire in the conflict with Ukraine on Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Meeting with Russia's Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, at the Kremlin, Putin stated that the ceasefire would start at 06.00 PM Moscow time on Saturday and end at midnight on Sunday.
"For humanitarian reasons, the Russian side is declaring an Easter (Sunday) ceasefire today … I order a halt to all military operations for this period," he said as quoted by Anadolu on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
Putin hopes that Ukraine will agree to this ceasefire. He stated that the success or failure of the ceasefire will demonstrate Ukraine's readiness and capacity to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
"Russian troops must be prepared to repel possible violations of the ceasefire and provocations by the opponent," he said.
A 30-day moratorium on military attacks on energy infrastructure showed Kyiv's lack of a tendency to seek a peaceful solution through negotiations, he said, adding that Ukrainian forces had violated it more than 100 times.
In response to Russia's Easter ceasefire announcement on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv would act in the same way. In a statement on Telegram, Zelensky said Ukraine would also observe a ceasefire as long as Russia adheres to it.
"If Russia is now suddenly ready to truly engage in a format of full and unconditional silence, Ukraine will act accordingly - mirroring Russia's actions," he said.
Zelensky indicated that Ukraine was open to extending a truce beyond April 20, apparently alluding to an earlier United States proposal for a 30-day ceasefire that Ukraine had already accepted.
In response to Putin’s initial announcement, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha commented on X that Putin had made remarks suggesting a supposed willingness to implement a ceasefire, but only for 30 hours rather than the 30 days previously discussed.
