Putin Proposes Russia as Mediator in Iran-Israel Conflict

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Vladimir Putin has declared Russia's readiness to mediate between Israel and Iran, aiming to prevent further escalation following a wave of Israeli airstrikes in Iranian territory.

Putin held separate phone calls with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During these calls, he condemned Israel's attacks on Iran and formally offered Russia's mediation to de-escalate tensions.

In his conversation with Netanyahu, Putin emphasized the necessity of a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Iran conflict and urged a restart of negotiations.

The Kremlin, as quoted by Anadolu, stated, "The importance of resolving all issues related to the Iranian nuclear program exclusively through political and diplomatic means was emphasized." The Kremlin further added that Moscow is prepared to provide mediation services to avert further escalation.

Earlier, the Israeli prime minister's office had indicated that Netanyahu planned to brief Putin on the latest developments.

During his phone call with Pezeshkian, Putin expressed condolences to Iran's leaders and people for the loss of life resulting from Israel's attacks. Moscow strongly condemned Israel's actions, characterizing them as violations of the UN Charter and international law. Putin reaffirmed Russia's full support for peaceful efforts to resolve issues surrounding Iran's nuclear program.

Israel initiated its military operation on Friday morning, targeting Iran's nuclear and military facilities and reportedly killing a top military commander and scientists. The attacks continued until Friday night, striking cities such as Tehran, Natanz, Tabriz, and Isfahan. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed retaliation against Israel.

On Friday night, Iran launched approximately 100 missiles against Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel. As reported by Axios, this retaliation commenced 18 hours after Israel's initial offensive against Iran.

According to CNN, Iran claimed to have targeted Israeli military-industrial centers used for missile and other military equipment production. Iran further asserted that on-the-ground reports, satellite images, and intercepted intelligence indicated that dozens of ballistic missiles effectively hit strategic targets.

An Israeli official and a senior U.S. official confirmed that the U.S. assisted in intercepting incoming ballistic missiles. During an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Friday, a U.S. representative stated that Iran should refrain from targeting U.S. interests or personnel.
