See Jakarta's Traffic Diversions for Independence Day Celebrations

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta authorities will implement situational traffic diversions on several major roads on Sunday, August 17, as the capital hosts a series of events marking Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.

The Jakarta Transportation Agency has prepared different traffic arrangements for the morning flag ceremonies, the People’s Festival at the National Monument (Monas), and evening celebrations featuring a decorated vehicle carnival.

Around 500 transportation officers will be deployed to manage traffic and direct motorists throughout the day.

Here is the traffic management schedule and the alternative routes prepared by the Jakarta Transportation Agency:

1. Morning Flag Parade and Independence Day Ceremonies

Traffic management: 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The arrangements will cover the Heritage Flag Delivery Parade, the Proclamation Day ceremony, the Red-and-White Flag Lowering Ceremony, and the Heritage Flag Return Parade.

Roads affected:

• Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat

• Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara

• Jalan Veteran I

• Jalan Veteran II

• Jalan Veteran III

• The eastern side of Jalan Majapahit, in the north-to-south direction

Alternative routes:

Harmoni to Tugu Tani:
Jalan Ir. H. Juanda → Jalan Pos → Jalan Gedung Kesenian → Jalan Lapangan Banteng Utara → Jalan Lapangan Banteng Barat → Jalan Taman Pejambon → Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur → Jalan MI Ridwan Rais.

Harmoni to Karet:
Jalan Ir. H. Juanda → Jalan Suryopranoto → Jalan Balikpapan → Jalan Cideng Timur → Jalan KH Mas Mansyur.

Tugu Tani to Harmoni:
Jalan MI Ridwan Rais → Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur → Jalan Perwira → Jalan Lapangan Banteng Barat → Jalan Katedral → Jalan Ir. H. Juanda.

Tugu Tani to Tanah Abang:
Jalan MI Ridwan Rais → Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan → Jalan Budi Kemuliaan.

Hotel Indonesia Roundabout to Harmoni:
Jalan MH Thamrin → Jalan Budi Kemuliaan → Jalan Abdul Muis → Jalan Majapahit.

2. People’s Festival Around Monas

Traffic management: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Situational traffic management will be implemented around Monas and surrounding areas throughout the People’s Festival.

Some alternative routes include:

Hotel Indonesia Roundabout to Harmoni:
Jalan MH Thamrin → Jalan Kebon Sirih → Jalan H. Fachrudin → Jalan Jati Baru Raya → Jalan Abdul Muis → Jalan Majapahit.

Jalan Agus Salim to Senen:
Jalan Kebon Sirih → Jalan Arief Rachman Hakim.

Tanah Abang to Tugu Tani:
Jalan Jati Baru Raya → Jalan Kebon Sirih.

Tanah Abang to Harmoni:
Jalan Jati Baru Raya → Jalan Abdul Muis → Jalan Majapahit.

Routes from Harmoni to Tugu Tani and Karet will generally follow the diversions applied during the morning flag parade and ceremonies.

3. Evening Celebration and Decorated Vehicle Carnival

Traffic management: 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The evening celebration will include a decorated vehicle carnival traveling through central Jakarta.

Carnival route:

Jalan Silang Merdeka Daya Barat near Monas → eastern side of Jalan MH Thamrin → Hotel Indonesia Roundabout → eastern side of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman → Jalan Galunggung → Dukuh Atas Skatepark.

Traffic management will be implemented as needed around:

• Jalan MH Thamrin

• Jalan Jenderal Sudirman

• Monas

• Tanah Abang

• Menteng

• Kebon Kacang

• Dukuh Atas

Alternative routes:

Harmoni to Kuningan:
Jalan Suryopranoto → Jalan Balikpapan → Jalan Cideng Timur → Jalan KH Mas Mansyur → Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio.

Menteng to Tanah Abang:
Jalan Imam Bonjol → Jalan H. Agus Salim → Jalan KH Wahid Hasyim → Jalan KH Mas Mansyur.

Kuningan or Senayan to Harmoni:
Jalan KH Mas Mansyur → Jalan Cideng Barat → Jalan Balikpapan → Jalan Suryopranoto.

Public Advised to Use Public Transportation

The Jakarta Transportation Agency urged residents who do not need to visit the celebration areas to avoid roads affected by the traffic arrangements and use alternative routes.

People planning to attend the Independence Day events are encouraged to use public transportation, follow traffic signs, and comply with directions from officers in the field.
