TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Singapore has been named the world’s cleanest tourist city, according to a report by Eagle Dumpster Rental, a US-based waste management company. The city-state is known for its litter-free streets, making it a comfortable place for residents and tourists alike.
Copenhagen came in second on the list of the world’s cleanest cities, followed by Denmark, Prague and the Czech Republic. The rankings were done by analysing major tourist destinations around the world based on factors such as street cleanliness, waste management practices, perceptions of public cleanliness and waste generation per capita. They used facts and figures from Numbeo’s quality of life database, Atlas D-Waste’s solid waste management database and city-specific resources for their report. Afterwards, each destination was given a Street Cleanliness Score.
Eagle Dumpster Rental’s recycling expert Brian McDaid said that street cleanliness has a significant impact on the visitor experience. “Aside from the obvious inconvenience, dirty streets can pose health risks and detract from the beauty of a destination,” he said, as reported by Travel and Leisure.
Strict Enforcement
Singapore earned the top spot for its strict enforcement of cleanliness laws, coupled with advanced waste management technology that ensures immaculate public spaces. The report highlights the country’s comprehensive approach, which includes public education, hefty fines for littering, and an efficient waste collection system.
“Singapore’s strict enforcement of cleanliness laws, combined with advanced waste management technology, creates clean public spaces,” said McDaid.
Signs prohibiting littering are widely visible throughout the island nation. Trash bins are also readily available. But what if you really can’t find a bin? It’s best to take your trash home with you, even if it’s just a candy wrapper.
First-time littering offenders face a fine of up to S$1,000 or around Rp12.8 million. The fine increases for second and subsequent offences. The Singapore government imposes fines of up to S$2,000, or around Rp25.6 million, and a Corrective Work Order as part of the punishment.
Smoking and Gum Ban
Singapore also has a smoking ban in most places, including bus stops, restaurants, parks and air-conditioned places. For those who want to enjoy a cigarette or two, there are designated smoking zones for them.
Chewing gum is also banned in Singapore on the grounds of maintaining the cleanliness of the city. For violations of chewing gum, the fine is the same as littering. But for people who import or bring from abroad, the fine reaches SGD 10,000 or Rp128 million.
