TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Warner Bros. has officially announced The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a new film directed by Andy Serkis, known for his iconic performance as Gollum in the original trilogy. The film is slated for release on December 17, 2027, according to a report from Variety.
The story will revolve around the complex character of Gollum and will explore a lesser-known chapter of Middle-earth lore. While the film was initially expected to premiere in 2026, the release has been postponed by a year.
Original Team Returns
Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens (the creative force behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies) will return as producers. Warner Bros. confirmed their involvement in developing the film alongside Serkis.
Boyens shared that The Hunt for Gollum tells a tense and untold part of the story that unfolds between Bilbo’s birthday party in The Fellowship of the Ring and the journey into the Mines of Moria.
"It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature (Gollum)," she said.
Possibility of Returning Cast
According to a report from Antara on Sunday, May 11, 2025, several original cast members have expressed interest in reprising their roles, among them Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, and Viggo Mortensen.
While their involvement will depend on the relevance of their characters to the new storyline, no casting has been confirmed so far.
A Familiar Release Pattern
Warner Bros. has chosen a December release date, aligning with the studio’s long-standing tradition of launching Middle-earth films during the holiday season. The Hunt for Gollum will be the first live-action installment in the franchise since The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies premiered in 2014.
The most recent theatrical release in the series was the animated feature The War of the Rohirrim, which debuted in December 2024.
In addition to The Hunt for Gollum, Warner Bros. also announced updates to its broader release calendar.
The studio confirmed that Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead sequel, starring Souheila Yacoub, will arrive in July 2026, followed by M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Remain, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters, which is scheduled for October of the same year.
