TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Aceh Regional Police uncovered 20 hectares of marijuana plantations scattered across several locations during Operation Antik Seulawah 2026, with authorities destroying three hectares of the find last Wednesday.
"In this operation, we found approximately 20 hectares of marijuana crops spread across various points, with an estimated harvest yield of 50 tons. However, three hectares located in Lampanah, Aceh Besar, were destroyed today," stated Aceh Police Chief Inspector General Marzuki Ali Basyah in a written statement released on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Marzuki noted that the destruction took place on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, carried out by a joint task force comprising the Indonesian National Armed Forces, local government officials, Bhayangkari members, and young millennial farmers from Aceh.
He mentioned that involving young farmers in the eradication effort is intended to cast them as agents of change, tasked with educating the public on transitioning from marijuana cultivation to productive commodities such as coffee, vegetables, and other economically viable crops.
He expressed his conviction that Aceh must shed its reputation as a hub for marijuana cultivation. To this end, the police have taken decisive action through crop destruction, paired with preventive strategies including education, community empowerment, and the strengthening of alternative economies.
He also urged all sectors of society to unite in the fight against narcotics.
The police chief called upon community leaders, village officials, and the younger generation to report any indications of drug abuse or trafficking within their neighborhoods without hesitation.
"Eradicating narcotics is not solely the duty of the police, but a shared responsibility. When the community finds the courage to speak up and take action, the space for perpetrators to operate will only become narrower," he said.
