TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Air India plane bound for Gatwick airport in London, England, crashed near a doctor's hostel shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on Thursday evening, June 11, 2025, near the airport perimeter, ANI reported as cited by The Economic Times. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner (VT-ANB) flight AI-171 carried 242 people, including two pilots and 10 cabin crew.
"Within 2–3 minutes, police and other agencies reached the spot. Almost 70–80% of the area has been cleared. All agencies are working here," a senior police officer told ANI.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation India (DGCA) confirmed that the plane crashed shortly after taking off from Runway 23 at 1:39 local time.
"Air India B787 Aircraft VT-ANB, while operating flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick, has crashed immediately after takeoff from Ahmedabad. There were 242 people on board… The aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar," DGCA said in a statement.
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal is a pilot with over 8,200 flying hours, while First Officer Clive Kundar has logged 1,100 hours.
Air traffic control personnel said the crew issued a MAYDAY distress call immediately after takeoff. No further communication was received after the distress signal. Moments later, the plane crashed just outside the airport perimeter.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick black smoke billowing from the crash site, located near the doctor's hostel, the residence area for medical professionals.
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is reportedly among the passengers on the ill-fated flight.
After being briefed about the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu.
According to sources, Modi has instructed both ministers to immediately travel to Ahmedabad, his hometown, and oversee the situation. He has also directed officials to ensure all possible assistance is provided to those affected and that relief and investigation efforts are expedited.
