TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, stated that the trade deal negotiations between the U.S. and China have concluded and are now awaiting final approval from him and the Chinese president.
As quoted from The Verge, President Donald Trump said that he has reached a deal with China that will ensure the United States receives a supply of rare earth materials, maintains a 55% tariff, and continues to allow universities in the U.S. to accept students from China. Trump announced this deal through Truth Social, which he says is still "awaiting final approval" from him and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
As noted by NBC News, the 55 percent figure is not new. It includes the 30 percent tariff that Trump introduced earlier this year, in addition to the existing 25 percent tax. China will impose a 10 percent tariff on U.S. goods in this deal.
The deal was reached after weeks of negotiations and economic uncertainty. The ongoing back-and-forth between the U.S. and China has made it difficult for businesses and consumers to track tariff policies.
In April, China responded to Trump's tariffs, reaching 145 percent, by imposing new customs duties and restricting rare earth minerals and magnets. Several car production lines in Europe are experiencing disruptions.
The U.S. and China had agreed to postpone tariff increases in May as both countries sought to reach an agreement, but tensions escalated again when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans to "aggressively withdraw visas" from Chinese students at the end of last month.
"Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China," said Trump.
However, according to Trump and his administration, the U.S. and China are finally on the verge of reaching a deal. "We have reached a framework to implement the Geneva consensus and the call between the two presidents," said U.S. Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Meanwhile, as reported by Antara, Trump also stated that the United States will fulfill its commitments under the deal, including keeping opportunities open for Chinese students to pursue education in various universities in the US.
Trump said the relationship between the U.S. and China is "very good."
He also stated that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping plan to collaborate closely to open the Chinese market to U.S. products. He concluded that this would be a big win for both countries.
High officials from the United States and China meet in London this week to discuss trade tariff issues.
Previously, in April, the U.S. began imposing high tariffs on China. In May, however, the two countries agreed to suspend most tariffs for 90 days.
