Analyst Urges Evaluation of Football Association After Patrick Kluivert's Dismissal

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Football analyst Erwiyantoro has scrutinized the dismissal of Patrick Kluivert from the position of head coach of the Indonesian national team. The termination of the cooperation was announced by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) through its official website on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

Erwiyantoro emphasizes that it is the fate of coaches worldwide to be dismissed. However, in the case of Kluivert, it is a different scenario compared to various football issues in Indonesia.

According to him, the issue of Kluivert's dismissal is related to PSSI, led by Erick Thohir. Therefore, he continued, PSSI should also be evaluated after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The evaluation, he said, should be conducted by the voting members, namely the PSSI Provincial Associations and PSSI City Associations, who elect PSSI officials.

"A total of 87 voters must take a stance now, acknowledging that they have appointed the wrong people to sit in the PSSI to manage football," he said when contacted by Tempo on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

However, Erwiyantoro continued, if the voters remain silent, the same problem will occur repeatedly. "Because the fault lies with PSSI," he said. He added that the Ministry of Youth and Sports cannot evaluate the Football Association of Indonesia. This right is held by the voters who appoint PSSI officials.

The Ministry can only review the progress of PSSI, but the results will not have an impact because the Minister of Youth and Sports and the Chair of PSSI are held by the same person, Erick. "So the basis of it all is ethics and morality," said Erwiyantoro.

Kluivert was appointed as the head coach of the Indonesian national team along with the coaching staff on January 8, 2025. He was under contract for two years with an option to extend. His appointment was announced only a few days after the dismissal of coach Shin Tae-yong from South Korea. At that time, the Garuda team was striving to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, with four matches remaining in the third round of qualifying.

The 49-year-old Dutch coach was expected to complete the mission of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. However, he failed to lead Indonesia to the prestigious tournament after suffering two defeats in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in the Asian zone. The Garuda Squad lost to Saudi Arabia 2-3 and to Iraq 0-1, thereby being eliminated from the competition for finishing third or last in Group B.
