CAPCOM has announced a new installment of the 'Resident Evil' franchise titled 'Resident Evil Requiem' at Summer Game Fest 2025. According to Game Spot, the premier trailer of 'Requiem' depicts a dark and desolate ambiance, indicating that players will return to Raccoon City, the main backdrop in several early 'Resident Evil' games.

This announcement is accompanied by a premier trailer that unveils early details regarding the setting, characters, and gameplay. The game is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.

About 'Resident Evil Requiem'

1. New Character

The central storyline of Requiem will focus on a new character named Grace Ashcroft, an FBI analyst. Grace is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, a journalist who previously appeared in the online spin-off 'Resident Evil Outbreak' during the Raccoon City outbreak.

2. Return to Racoon City

Citing IGN, the premier trailer of Requiem shows a background indicating the return to Raccoon City, the iconic city in Resident Evil 1 to 3. However, the city now appears in ruins due to a nuclear attack to contain the spread of the T-virus.

The return to Raccoon City, even in its dilapidated state, suggests Capcom's effort to connect classic elements of the franchise with a narrative and cinematographic approach.

3. 30th Anniversary Celebration

This announcement is also part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the 'Resident Evil franchise.' Resident Evil executive producer Jun Takeuchi expressed appreciation through a video to the fans for their continued support.

The video also features various iconic visual elements from the Resident Evil series, including the 'Welcome to Raccoon City' signboard, a typewriter from the local police station, and the character Lady Dimitrescu from 'Resident Evil Village'. A clip of Maggie Robertson, the voice actress of Dimitrescu, eerily singing Happy Birthday, is also included.

4. Gameplay

According to Info Petite Nation, although information about Resident Evil 9 gameplay is scarce, initial leaks from reliable sources are starting to provide an overview of the direction of this new installment. One of them hints at the possibility of a return to the fixed camera perspective. This perspective will be combined with various modern gameplay elements.

Capcom is reportedly developing the game in an open-world format. Players will have more freedom to explore vast areas filled with enemies, puzzles, and other interactive elements. This approach indicates an effort to combine classic survival horror nuances with a more dynamic and action-packed gameplay style.

From a narrative perspective, hints from the early promotional material suggest that the storyline in Resident Evil 9 will involve the return of iconic characters from previous installments.
