TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police guarding the Mobile Brigade Command Headquarters (Mako Brimob) in Kwitang, Central Jakarta, continued firing tear gas until Friday night, August 29, 2025.
Around 7:30 PM, under a light drizzle, crowds scattered, desperately seeking shelter from the stinging gas. From dawn until late at night, authorities continued deploying tear gas.
Initially concentrated near Mako Brimob Kwitang, the effects of the gas spread, reaching as far as Senen Train Station, about 1.2 kilometers away. In response, some in the crowd fired firecrackers toward the police.
Dozens of people collapsed, suffering from respiratory distress and irritated eyes. Several ambulances rushed to evacuate them, while medical personnel assisted others lying along the roadside.
Despite the chaos, protesters continued to gather in front of Mako Brimob Kwitang late into the night, fueled by anger over the death of fellow professional Affan Kurniawan, who was crushed by a tactical vehicle in the Penjompongan area.
The Commander of the Jakarta Metro Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob), Commissioner Henik Maryanto, said that an internal investigation by the Police Internal Affairs is underway regarding the incident involving Affan Kurniawan.
“By Allah, by the Prophet. I am a Muslim. Our members are currently under investigation at the National Police Headquarters,” Commissioner Henik said to the crowd near Mako Brimob Kwitang on Friday, August 29, 2025, before the riot escalated.
He added that the investigation is also a direct mandate from President Prabowo Subianto. “We are committed to thoroughly investigating the case that led to the death of the online motorcycle taxi driver. If we didn’t have good intentions, I wouldn’t be here. But we do,” he said.
