TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The first wave of the Eid exodus return flow is imminent. The National Police spokesperson for the 2026 Eid Operation, Commissioner General Marupa Sagala, urges travelers to divert their trips towards alternative routes to reduce traffic congestion.

"Travelers can use the alternative route of the Jakarta-Cikampek II South Toll Road to avoid traffic congestion at the main route," said Marupa in a written statement on Monday, March 23, 2026.

These alternative routes are free of charge at certain times during the Eid homecoming season, incentivizing travelers to avoid the main routes to avoid vehicle pileups.

For this year's Eid homecoming period, the police predict two phases of peak exodus. The first wave is on March 24, 2026, while the second wave is on March 28-29, 2026.

Based on calculations obtained from the Jasamarga Tollroad Command Center (JMTC), over 285,000 vehicles are expected to hit the road during the first wave of return flow peak. This number is higher than the peak of the Eid homecoming exodus on March 18, 2026, which recorded 270,315 vehicles.

As a precautionary measure, the National Police will implement a national one-way system on the Trans-Java Toll Road starting today, from KM 414 to KM 70.

The police will also implement situational traffic diversion methods, including a local one-way scheme and contraflow.

In order to optimize the smooth flow of the Eid homecoming exodus, the police will also conduct monitoring through surveillance cameras, real-time traffic counting, and cross-sector coordination with the Ministry of Transportation, Jasa Marga, and Jasa Raharja.

On a separate occasion, Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi urged travelers to avoid the peak wave of Eid return flow by departing earlier on March 23, or March 25-27, during the government-mandated work from anywhere (WFA) policy.
