TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The title of the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Andrew, has been revoked. He is now only referred to as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. Prince Charles has stripped his brother's title that he held since birth and evicted him from Windsor Castle, following his connection to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, as reported by Buckingham Palace on Thursday, October 30, as cited by CNA News.
A representative of Buckingham Palace stated that Prince Charles "initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew."
"These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him,” the palace said. “Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse," wrote a palace representative.
As stated by the palace representative, this action is a result of increasing public pressure in the UK in recent years over Andrew's proximity to the late American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Andrew is expected to move to a property on the king's land in Sandringham near the northeast coast and receive personal financial support from his brother.
Demands for the palace to evict the prince from the Royal Lodge have escalated after he relinquished the title of Duke of York earlier this month, following new revelations about his ties to Epstein. In addition, accusations of sexual abuse brought back by one of Epstein's victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, whose memoir hit bookstores last week, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Significant Step
The revocation of a title of a prince or princess in England is extremely rare. The last time this happened was in 1919, when Prince Ernest Augustus, an English nobleman and also Prince of Hanover, had his title revoked for siding with Germany during World War I.
Andrew, who was once known as a British naval officer and took part in the war with Argentina in the Falkland Islands, is now cast out from his position and title.
He was first forced to resign as a trade envoy in 2011, then in 2019, he ceased all royal duties. In 2022, his military and royal protection were revoked amid allegations of sexual abuse that he always denied, but slowly eroded his reputation.
According to a source within the palace reported by CNA News, this move, although carried out by King Charles, is a step supported by the Palace Family, including Prince William, the future king.
Victory for the Victims
Giuffre's brother declared the victory for his sister, who died in April at the age of 41.
"Today, an ordinary American girl from an ordinary American family, brought down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage," said her brother, Skye Roberts, in a statement.
Andrew faced new public condemnation after emails emerged earlier this month showing that he remained in contact with Epstein longer than he had previously admitted.
The news was followed by the publication of Nobody's Girl by Giuffre, who alleged three separate forced sexual encounters with Andrew when she was 17. Giuffre recalled that Andrew acted as if he believed "having sex with me was his basic right".
Andrew, 65, has long denied Giuffre's claims, but resigned from royal duties after a failed BBC interview in November 2019 where he attempted to deny Giuffre's allegations.
Andrew paid millions of dollars in an out-of-court settlement in 2022 after Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against him in New York.
Although not admitting to any wrongdoing, he acknowledged Giuffre's suffering as a victim of sex trafficking.
