TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A video claiming to show thousands of Israelis fleeing following the collapse of negotiations between the United States and Iran began circulating on Instagram [archieve] on April 16, 2026.
The one-minute video shows crowds and vehicle convoys on city streets at night. The account owner claims the exodus of hundreds of thousands of settlers reflects panic following the failure of diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran.

However, is it true that this video depicts an Israeli exodus?
FACT CHECK
Tempo verified the content using reverse image search and comparison with credible media reports. The crowd in the video was actually recorded in Timor-Leste during Pope Francis' visit on September 10, 2024.
A search revealed an identical video with higher resolution uploaded by the Facebook account Avelino Jenito Barros and the TikTok account rey.marques on September 11, 2024. The footage documents the enthusiasm of Catholics welcoming the historic papal visit.

At the 0:13 mark, a mural of Pope Francis is visible on a wall to the right of the road. This image is identical to an AFP photo of Catholics heading to Mass near the Tasitolu Esplanade Park in Dili on September 10, 2024.
Tempo compared these visual clues with Google Maps. The video was recorded along Jalan Raikotu Golgotha in Dili, Timor-Leste.

The video was recorded from a hilltop opposite the Pope Francis mural.

Massive Mass in Tasitolu
Tempo noted that Tasitolu Square was transformed into a sea of people as approximately 700,000 Catholics gathered to see Pope Francis in person. Of that total, roughly 10,000 traveled from East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
The BBC reported that the Mass in Dili was one of the largest during Pope Francis' papacy, with the congregation representing nearly half of the country's population.
The Catholic media network EWTN broadcast the event live. Several international media outlets, including the Associated Press, AFP, ABC News, and Mizzima TV, also covered this historic visit.
CONCLUSION
Based on this verification, Tempo concludes that the claim asserting the video shows Israelis in the midst of a mass exodus is false.
