Fatalities Rise to 49 in Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School Collapse

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of fatalities resulting from the collapse of the mosque at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, continues to rise. As of midnight on Sunday, October 5, 2025, the confirmed death toll has reached 49.

In the evacuation efforts on Sunday, the joint search and rescue (SAR) team from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) discovered bodies among the debris. The day before, a total of 25 fatalities had been recovered.

The figure climbed by an additional 24 victims to a total of 49 after the search conducted from midnight until 11:30 PM. 'A total of 24 bodies have been found, including four human body parts,' said the Head of the Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, in a written statement on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

Abdul stated that all the bodies and body parts had been taken to the Bhayangkara Hospital in Surabaya for identification. Following the latest discovery of bodies, the number of missing victims currently stands at 14 people.

Meanwhile, the number of survivors found stands at 104 people, with 6 still in intensive care, 97 having completed medical treatment, and 1 returning home without needing medical care.

The collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Buduran, Sidoarjo, occurred on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 3:00 PM. At that time, male students were performing the Asr prayer on the ground floor, while the building had four stories. The debris cleanup and victim evacuation are still ongoing until Monday, October 6, 2025.

The East Java Regional Police will further investigate the suspicion of human negligence in the collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo. This action will be taken after the completion of the evacuation process.

'The initial indications of the cause of the collapse will be explained by experts for scientific validity. So, let's be patient, let's complete the victim evacuation first,' said the East Java Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Nanang Avianto, in a written statement on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

According to Anang, conclusions regarding the suspicion of construction negligence can only be made by experts. This is still under examination. The police have summoned several witnesses, most of whom are students of the Islamic boarding school.
