TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The weather has been rainy in Greater Jakarta for the past two days. Persistent rain almost throughout Sunday morning until Monday morning, January 11-12, 2026. Followed by rain from Monday morning until late this noon.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded heavy rainfall in parts of Greater Jakarta throughout Sunday morning until Monday morning. It's no wonder that flood reports came from many areas when heavy rain returned on Monday morning until noon.

Reports from rain monitoring stations in Citayam and Jagorawi Bogor, both in Bogor Regency, revealed rainfall figures of up to 129.0 and 109.8 mm throughout Sunday morning until Monday morning.

According to BMKG, heavy rain is classified with a range of 100-150 mm rainfall per day. More than that is considered extreme rain, while less than that is categorized as heavy rain (50-100 mm per day).

Heavy rain during the same period was also reported by BMKG from the areas of Pelabuhan Tanjung Priok, Pasar Minggu, Atang Sanjaya Bogor, Pesanggrahan (Depok), Beji Depok, Mauk Tangerang, Ancol, Soekarno Hatta Airport, and Bekasi.

Not only in Greater Jakarta, but very heavy rain also occurred in Makassar (126.7 mm/day), East Nusa Tenggara (126.0 mm), and Bali (120.0 mm). BMKG revealed this in the weekly weather prospects for the period of January 13-19, 2026, which was published today.

In his statement, the Head of BMKG's Public Meteorology Directorate, Andri Ramdhani, explained that this extreme weather condition was triggered by a combination of regional-scale atmospheric dynamics that reinforced each other. Firstly, he mentioned the strengthening of the Asian Monsoon, accompanied by an increase in wind speed in the South China Sea region moving southward through the Karimata Strait until reaching Java Island.

"This wind flow pattern increases the formation and strengthening of convergence zones, especially along Java Island, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara, which play an important role in triggering intensive rain cloud growth," he said in a written statement.

Secondly, there was observed the presence of a low-pressure area in the Indian Ocean south of West Nusa Tenggara, which also influenced the regional wind circulation pattern. Andri stated that this system caused the airflow in the southern part of Indonesia to be more dominant towards the east, thus further strengthening convergence and slowing down the air mass in the southern part of Indonesia.

"This condition supports the more intensive and continuous ascent of air, which ultimately increases the potential for heavy rain in most of Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara," he added.

Weather Forecast for the Next Week

In his release, Andri stated that Jakarta and its surrounding areas are among the regions that need to be cautious of an increase in moderate-intensity rain from January 13-19. However, Jakarta did not receive a early warning for heavy to very heavy rain. The early warnings that are in effect for Jakarta and its surrounding areas are for strong winds.

BMKG issued early warnings for heavy to very heavy rain for West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and Papua Highlands (January 13-15). While West Sumatra, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, and Papua Highlands are under warning for January 16-19.
