Foreign Affairs Ministry Assists 87 Indonesian Students at Harvard Amid U.S. Visa Crackdown

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been actively coordinating with multiple stakeholders to protect 87 Indonesian students at Harvard University impacted by the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies targeting international students.

Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizens’ Protection at the Ministry, said in a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday, June 12, 2025, that 46 of the 87 students are recipients of scholarships from the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP).

The situation arose after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security revoked Harvard University's certification to admit international students under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program on May 22. In response, Harvard challenged the decision in court, and the Federal Boston Court issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) to halt the move.

Tensions escalated further when, on June 4, the U.S. government moved to suspend F-1 visas for Harvard students. Harvard responded with another legal challenge, resulting in a second TRO issued by the same court on June 6.

"We have made various efforts. The Indonesian government has closely coordinated with LPDP and communicated with the students there," said Judha.

The Foreign Ministry also confirmed it has been in direct contact with Harvard University and has communicated with the affected students through the Harvard Indonesian Student Association (HISA) to stay updated on developments.

This policy shift reflects a broader tightening of immigration measures under Donald Trump’s administration, with the potential to affect thousands of international students across the United States.
