Forensic Scientists Suspect Kurt Cobain Was Murdered

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Almost 32 years have passed since the death of Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of the American grunge band Nirvana, and forensic scientists suspect he was murdered. Independent investigators, joining an unofficial private sector team, are re-examining the autopsy results and crime scene materials.

"This is a homicide. We've got to do something about this," said Michelle Wilkins, an independent investigator, as quoted by the Daily Mail, Wednesday, February 11, 2026. She and Brian Burnett spent three days reviewing the case with a new perspective and a long gap in time. Burnet specializes in overdose cases followed by gunshot trauma. The team reached a new conclusion, differing from what his fans had believed for 31 years.

Findings Conclude Kurt Cobain Was Murdered

Wilkins said the conclusion came after a thorough review of the autopsy findings, which she said showed inconsistent signs of an instantaneous gunshot death. The "Smells Like Teen Spirit" singer was found dead on April 8, 1994, at his home on Lake Washington Boulevard in Seattle, Washington. His death is believed to have occurred three days earlier.

The peer-reviewed paper outlines ten pieces of evidence suggesting that Cobain was allegedly ambushed by one or more assailants. They forced Cobain to overdose on heroin to incapacitate him, before one of them shot him in the head, placed the gun in his arms, and left a fake suicide note.

"There are things in the autopsy that go, well, wait, this person didn't die very quickly of a gunshot blast,'" Wilkins said, referring to organ damage related to oxygen deprivation. "The necrosis of the brain and liver happens in an overdose. It doesn't happen in a shotgun death." At the time of Cobain's death, the King County Medical Examiner's Office declared the official cause of death as suicide with a 20-gauge Remington Model 11 shotgun.

Investigation Results Were Arranged

However, Wilkins said the King County investigation appeared to be orchestrated, like a director directing a movie. "To me, it looks like someone staged a movie and wanted you to be absolutely certain this was a suicide. The receipt for the gun is in his pocket. The receipt for the shells is in his pocket. The shells are lined up at his feet," he said, as quoted by the Mirror.

Police investigating Cobain's death said the guitarist, who died at age 27, injected heroin at ten times the dose typically used by heavy users. His autopsy found fluid in the lungs, hemorrhaging in the eyes, and brain and liver damage. "King County Medical Examiner’s Office worked with the local law enforcement agency, conducted a full autopsy, and followed all of its procedures in coming to the determination of the manner of death as a suicide," a spokesperson for the Medical Examiner's Office said.
