TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono along with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot has confirmed that French President Emmanuel Macron will conduct a state visit to Indonesia in May 2025.

Macron's visit plan has become one of the agendas discussed during the bilateral meeting of the two foreign ministers at the Pancasila Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

"We discussed the preparation for the visit and also outlined priority measures to enhance the relationship between the two countries as an outcome of the visit," Sugiono stated to the journalists.

Sugiono also presented several main topics of the Indonesia-France bilateral cooperation discussed in the meeting, such as energy transition, food security, defense, digital transformation, and cultural relations.

Sugiono hopes that the cooperation between Indonesia and France can yield concrete results for the people of both countries. He also wishes to strengthen the 75-year-old Indonesia-France bilateral relationship, especially through Macron's visit to Indonesia.

"The outcomes must be something real, impactful, and involving all relevant stakeholders," he added.

Meanwhile, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Nol Barrot, reaffirmed Macron's plan to visit Indonesia.

"We are actively preparing, together, the President's (Macron) visit in May," he said.

Barrot also emphasized the importance of cooperation between Indonesia and France in responding to various international crises, including conflicts in several countries in the Middle East such as Ukraine, Africa, and Myanmar. Barrot highlighted the alarming humanitarian situations in several regions, such as Sudan, the Middle East, and Myanmar. "In Sudan and the Middle East, the world's worst humanitarian crises are occurring. I am also concerned about the crisis in Myanmar, which has very serious consequences for its people," he said.

According to him, Indonesia and France, as countries committed to peace, need to unite in pushing for sustainable solutions. Like Indonesia, France is known for actively supporting multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation.

Barrot emphasized that this visit is an opportunity for both countries to express their views on the importance of multilateralism in addressing global issues. "This is a moment to strengthen collaboration through dialogue and peace approaches," he said.

He also expressed his confidence that the leaders of both countries will continue to deepen discussions on these strategic issues. France and Indonesia have a long history of supporting conflict resolution through diplomatic channels, including through the UN forum and other international organizations.

According to the press release from the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 as reported by Antara, Macron conveyed his plan to visit Indonesia in May to the Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, during the AI Action Summit held in Paris, France, on Tuesday.

"I will, I will. I love your country," Macron said to Meutya.

If Macron's plan materializes, it will be the first state visit by the President of France to Indonesia since the joint declaration of the strategic partnership between the two countries in 2011. At that time, Prime Minister Franois Fillon and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met in Jakarta.

Meutya stated that Macron's planned visit will be an important moment in strengthening the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and France.

"President Macron's visit to Indonesia will further enhance strategic cooperation in various sectors, including digital economy, artificial intelligence, defense, and green energy," she added.
