TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The beauty of the night sky continues to live on this month as stargazers welcome the Flower Moon. On May 1, the celestial event will arrive at a seasonal midpoint between spring and summer, signaling a transition marked by longer days and a flourishing scenery.

Expected to reach its peak on Friday, the full moon derives its name from its arrival in mid-spring, a period that coincides with the widespread blooming of flowers, trees, and shrubs across the landscape.

To better plan the event, here’s everything you need to know about the Flower Moon, according to Forbes and USA Today.

When is the best time to see the Flower Moon?

The Flower Moon will light up the night sky on May 1 and reach its full illumination at 1:24 p.m. EDT. According to experts, although its peak occurs during daylight hours, the moon will still appear brightly full on both the preceding and following nights.

For observers across North America, the best time to view it will be at moonrise during dusk on Friday, as the moon gradually emerges along the eastern horizon. Below are some of the expected rises of the Flower Moon:

  • New York: sunset at 7:51 p.m. EDT, moonrise at 8:17 p.m. EDT on Friday, May 1.
  • Los Angeles: sunset at 7:36 p.m. PDT, moonrise at 8:04 p.m. PDT on Friday, May 1.
  • London: sunset at 8:22 p.m. BST, moonrise at 8:46 p.m. BST on Friday, May 1.

Flower Moon and its name variants

Drawing on records from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, May’s full moon, commonly referred to as the Flower Moon, is named for the abundance of blooming flowers that mark the height of spring.

The Almanac notes that the lunar event has been recognized by a variety of names across cultures and traditions, including the Budding Moon, Leaf Budding Moon, Planting Moon, Egg Laying Moon, and Frog Moon.
