TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The German Ambassador to Indonesia, Ralf Beste, believes that the global energy unrest triggered by conflicts in the Middle East can be an opportunity for Indonesia and Germany to strengthen cooperation in alternative energy and energy resilience.
Beste stated that the energy crisis resulting from regional conflicts highlights the importance of diversifying energy sources and strengthening national energy resilience. In a press conference at the German Embassy in Jakarta on Friday, he said the Iran conflict and the scarcity of fossil fuels are signals that this issue is not only about addressing climate change, but also about maintaining energy resilience, which is in our common interest.
He pointed out that the increasing geopolitical tension compels Indonesia and Germany to reduce their dependency on energy supplies from regions beyond their control.
Best noted that the current global situation also urges many countries to expedite the development of renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels that must be imported from abroad.
He acknowledged that the energy transition is a long-term process and emphasized that Germany is ready to share its experiences and technical expertise with Indonesia. He also said that Germany is ready to engage in discussions with Indonesia about the most suitable steps to support the transformation of the energy sector.
However, Beste cautioned that Indonesia's and Germany's energy mix structures have different characteristics. Therefore, their cooperation on the energy transition must be tailored to Indonesia's needs and interests.
Furthermore, he highlighted Germany's support for Indonesia's energy transition through the Just Energy Transition Partnership scheme launched in 2022.
According to Beste, out of the $20 billion in total target funding prepared to support the development of clean energy in Indonesia, Germany has contributed approximately $1.5 billion.
In addition to discussing energy issues, Beste also addressed the impact of conflicts in the Middle East on global energy supply stability. He believes that ending the conflicts in the region is a shared interest of Indonesia and Germany.
Beste said that Indonesia and Germany share an interest in ending the war in the Persian Gulf.
