Government Seeks UNHCR Protection for Indonesian Refugees Abroad

1 day ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai has asked the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist Indonesian refugees abroad. According to him, the international organization has to protect refugees across borders.

Natalius Pigai made the request after meeting with UNHCR representatives at his office. The meeting aimed to discuss refugees from abroad in Indonesia and vice versa.

"Therefore, we will also ask the UNHCR to assist our citizens abroad," said Pigai when met at his office on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. In addition to helping refugees, Pigai asked the UNHCR to assist migrant workers, asylum seekers, and Indonesians without citizenship.

Pigai stated that the government, along with UNHCR, will pay attention and provide assistance to Indonesian citizens facing issues abroad. Because Indonesian citizens abroad remain the responsibility of the country.

Pigai believes that, as one of the largest senders of migrant workers in the world, Indonesia is obliged to protect anyone seeking refuge in Indonesia. This is in accordance with the principle of reciprocity or equality.

He stated that the country's protection of refugees is based on humanity without discriminating against their origins. "A country must respect and care for everyone living within its borders," he said.
