TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of individuals suspected of being involved in activities related to child pornography have been arrested in an international investigation operation related to online pornography conducted by law enforcement in six East and Southeast Asian countries, including South Korea and Japan.

The National Investigation Bureau (NOI) of South Korea, on Saturday, April 5, 2025, as reported by Antara, confirmed that 435 suspected offenders involved in online child pornography in these six countries have been apprehended.

According to NOI, the investigation was carried out in February and March through collaboration with the police forces of Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore, which initiated the operation.

South Korea became the country with the highest number of apprehensions, reaching 374 individuals. Of this number, 258 were found to possess or view materials of child sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, 74 others were identified as creators of child pornography content and 42 others were involved in its distribution process. Currently, 13 offenders have been detained.

The majority of individuals arrested by South Korean authorities were teenagers, totaling 213 people, followed by 127 individuals in their twenties, and 23 people in their thirties.

Furthermore, Japanese authorities announced that 111 individuals have been detained in the country on a range of charges related to child pornography and child prostitution.

"This crime causes an indescribable pain to children and requires a strong international response because digital exploitation goes beyond national borders," according to an NOI official.

"We will continue to strengthen cross-border coordination to address child sexual exploitation in the digital world," the official said.
