TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is not yet committed to paying US$1 billion for the Board of Peace, a Trump-backed group tasked with overseeing the Gaza reconstruction, according to Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa.
"The President always says: no, we're not yet committed to pay. From the beginning, we are committed to sending troops, but not payment," said Purbaya when met at his office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
The minister said there has been no directive from President Prabowo Subianto to earmark a Board of Peace budget. He also expressed objection if government funds were used for the benefit of Israel and reiterated that the government's position in this matter has not changed.
Prabowo previously mentioned that Indonesia never pledged to pay the US$1 billion contribution to the peace board. According to Prabowo, Indonesia's commitment is limited to sending peacekeepers under the International Stabilization Force.
Prabowo made this statement during an interview session with several journalists and experts at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on March 17-18, 2026.
"We never said that we wanted to contribute US$1 billion," said Prabowo, as quoted from a video interview shared by the Presidential Secretariat on Sunday, March 22, 2026.
During the session, Prabowo emphasized that no financial commitment was ever promised to the United States regarding Indonesia's participation in the Board of Peace.
Prabowo also mentioned Indonesia's absence from the funding donors' meeting in Washington D.C. on February 19 as evidence that Indonesia is not involved in the initial funding commitment. He affirmed that Indonesia's contribution to the Board of Peace is manifested through peacekeepers' deployment, not financial assistance.
