TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto received Japanese Defense Minister Koizumi Shinjiro at his residence on Jalan Kertanegara IV, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. Prabowo hosted the representative of the partner nation at his residence.
Shinjiro's visit to Indonesia was a reciprocal gesture. "The meeting essentially was a reciprocal visit following the visit of the Indonesian Defense Minister to Japan some time ago," Defense Ministry spokesperson Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait told reporters on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Rico stated that the meeting took place at the Kertanegara residence on Friday, June 12, 2026. Discussions centered on implementing defense cooperation following the signing of the Defense Cooperation Arrangement (DCA). Prabowo and Shinjiro also explored potential collaboration in personnel exchanges, maritime security, technology, and the defense industry.
The talks further highlighted the importance of human resources development within the defense sector. This includes personnel exchanges, education, and academic cooperation, including the enrollment of Indonesian cadets in the National Defense Academy of Japan.
On the other hand, Rico noted that no decisions regarding the procurement of major defense equipment (alutsista) were reached during the session. According to him, this option requires further deliberation between Tokyo and Jakarta. "Regarding defense equipment cooperation, the discussion focused on potential cooperation and further exploration," he said.
Shinjiro also shared highlights of his meeting with President Prabowo on his personal Instagram account. In the post, the Japanese Defense Minister is seen presenting Prabowo with a model warship as a token of appreciation.
"Last night, at the private residence of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, I presented him with a model of the battleship 'Mikasa,' which is based in my hometown of Yokosuka. President Prabowo, a former military officer and Defense Minister, was very happy," Shinjiro wrote in his post.
During the meeting at the Kertanegara residence, President Prabowo was accompanied by members of the Red and White Cabinet. Among those in attendance were Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Foreign Minister Sugiono, and Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto.
