TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita is optimistic that the country's cement industry will gain a competitive edge in the global market "by implementing green industry principles," while noting emissions reduction in the sector.
The declining emissions, according to the Ministry of Industry, align with the industrial net zero emission (NZE) target for 2050.
The ministry recorded a decrease in the clinker factor to 68.1 percent from the 81 percent baseline in 2010. Meanwhile, the use of alternative energy or the thermal substitution rate (TSR) is up to 12.58 percent from the previous 3 percent.
Specific emissions from the cement industry have been reduced to 566.3 kilograms of CO2 per equivalent ton of cement, lower than the initial 724 kg of CO2 per ton of cement.
Minister Agus said the cement industry is one of the primary focuses of the national decarbonization agenda, as Indonesia is the largest cement-producing country in the Southeast Asian region. With a capacity of up to 121.66 million tons per year, Indonesia plays a strategic role in emission reduction efforts.
To achieve emission reduction, Agus stated that the Ministry of Industry is currently developing a roadmap for cement industry decarbonization.
In general, the overall industry decarbonization strategy is focused on emission reduction before entering the emission neutralization phase. The Golkar politician believes that emission reduction is more effective in gradually and sustainably reducing the industrial carbon footprint.
Head of the National Standardization Agency and Industrial Service Policy, Emmy Suryandari, earlier laid out the five pillars of Indonesia decarbonization strategy. These include energy and raw material efficiency through production process optimization, as well as fuel and raw material substitution.
In addition, decarbonization efforts are carried out through process production renewal using more efficient technology, electrification, and the application of carbon capture utilization (CCU) technology.
To support industrial transformation, the Ministry of Industry utilizes the Making Indonesia 4.0 roadmap and implements Green Industry Standards (SIH) to promote efficiency, productivity, and sustainability.
