TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka shared his views on the opportunities presented by the demographic bonus that the country will experience in the coming decade through a video uploaded by the Vice President's Secretariat on Monday, April 21, 2025. The video, titled "Giliran Kita" or "Our Turn", highlights the great potential held by the nation if it can maximize the advantage of its productive-age population.

In the approximately two-minute video, Gibran emphasized the critical period between 2030 and 2045 for Indonesia. He mentioned that during this time, around 208 million Indonesians will be in the productive age group.

This demographic dividend, according to him, is a strategic and unrepeatable momentum that must be capitalized to steer Indonesia towards sustainable progress.

"This is our turn. The turn of the young generation of Indonesia to take on a role, to become the main agents of change, and to determine the direction of the nation's future," said Gibran in his video narration.

He expressed that the success in utilizing the demographic bonus depends on how well the young generation can demonstrate readiness in navigating increasingly complex global challenges. These include issues such as trade disputes, geopolitical tensions, climate crises, and rapid technological developments like artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the Vice President, in the contemporary era of global competition, a nation's competitive edge is no longer solely determined by physical or economic might, but rather by the agility with which it learns, adapts, and innovates. Thus, the young generation is expected not only to be technology users but also to be capable of creating and leading the utilization of such technologies.

"Those who will prevail are the ones who learn the fastest, adapt the fastest, and seize opportunities the fastest," he said.

Gibran also encouraged Indonesian youth not to fear technological advancements. He emphasized that technology should be positioned as a tool to enhance human productivity, rather than as a threat that replaces human roles.

"Technology, including AI, is not an enemy. Instead, we should make it a companion to enhance efficiency and productivity," said Gibran, as quoted by Antara on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

The public's response to the video has been varied. Some laud Gibran's approach of educating and motivating the young generation through visual media as an adaptive communication strategy in the digital age.

On the other hand, some expressed that although the presented narrative sounds inspirational, the government needs to provide more concrete evidence regarding Indonesia's readiness to leverage the demographic bonus. This includes the quality of education, job creation, the readiness of digital infrastructure, and social protection for vulnerable groups.

The message conveyed by Gibran in the video aligns with the current challenges faced by the Indonesian nation. With projections that in the next fifteen years Indonesia will reach the peak of its demographic productivity, the active role of the young generation cannot be ignored. The government, education sector, private sector, and civil society are expected to synergize in creating conditions that allow this potential to materialize into a national development force.
