Iran Says It Only Permits Friendly Nations Through Strait of Hormuz

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has allowed ships from several “friendly countries,” including Russia, to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

“There is no reason to allow the enemy to pass through the strait. We have permitted certain countries that we consider friendly to pass through; we allowed China, Russia, India, Iraq, and Pakistan to transit,” Araghchi said, according to Lebanon-based satellite channel Al Mayadeen, as quoted by Antara.

Araghchi added that Tehran had no reason to allow what he called “enemy ships” to pass through the strategic waterway. He said vessels from the United States, Israel, and certain Gulf states involved in the current crisis would not be granted clearance to transit the strait.

The statement comes amid heightened tensions in the region following a sharp escalation between Iran, the United States, and Israel.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and U.S. military facilities in the Middle East.

The rising tensions around Iran have led to a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from the Persian Gulf to global markets.

The disruption has also affected oil production and export volumes across the region, contributing to higher fuel prices in many countries worldwide.
