Italy Offers 20,000 Euros Grant for Moving to Trentino

17 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Italy is one of the popular tourist destinations that is currently battling overtourism. Several policies have been implemented to address this issue, such as tourist taxes and visitor limitations at favorite tourist spots. However, one region in Italy is attracting people to move there with a special offer.

Over the past few years, houses have been sold for as cheap as 1 euro in several small towns and villages in Italy. This is to increase the continuously decreasing population. These houses were quickly sold out. Now, the Trentino region in northern Italy is offering people a grant of 20,000 euros to move there.

The money must be used to renovate empty houses in a city with vineyards, ski slopes, beautiful lakes, and near the Dolomites mountains. So, 20,000 euros is used to help buy the property, and 80,000 euros is for renovation.

However, to avail of this offer, the individuals involved must commit to living in the house for a decade or rent it out to residents for the same period. Renting the house to someone else or short-term rentals is not allowed. If violated, they must repay the entire grant.

Nicola Teofilo, a real estate writer at Immobiliare News, said these regions maintain a strong cultural identity and landscape. However, the population is gradually decreasing. He said daily life could be more complex because it's far from the main services. Many of these villages are located in mountainous or valley areas.

According to Teofilo's report, Trentino, the Italian government has allocated 10 million euros for the project over the next two years. It requires at least 100 people to move and renovate, addressing depopulation along the way. Interested individuals can also invest in up to three housing units, thus allowing them to bring other family members.

The final list of eligible communities to participate has not been announced but may be revealed in the coming weeks. There may be communities on the verge of extinction, including towns and villages in Val di Non, Val di Sole, Vallagarina, Castello Tesino, Val di Cembra, Val di Fiemme, Valfloriana, and Val di Fassa.
