TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The protest in the area in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Jakarta is expected to continue until Saturday morning, August 30, 2025. The protest was triggered by the death of Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver, who was run over by a police mobile brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle. The demonstration has been ongoing since Friday, August 29, 2025.

Hundreds of people are still gathered in the area in front of the parliament complex until 5:00 AM on Saturday. Some of them appear to be shouting at the police forces standing behind the DPR fence. "Police are killing the people," said one of the demonstrators.

Several protesters are still occasionally setting off firecrackers towards the police line. The police also continue to periodically fire tear gas at the demonstrators. The incident occurred at the western side of the main gate of the DPR, where the crowd broke through the fence.

The number of protesters has decreased from the thousands that were present at midnight. However, some demonstrators are still holding their ground at the location.

The fires that were blazing at several points have started to diminish. Earlier, the protesters had set fire to road dividers, trees, and electric poles.

Previously, at around 03:30 AM, military vehicles and fire trucks briefly passed through the protest site. They extinguished fires that were burning at various spots. After that, they left the location, which was still filled with protesters.

There were no police officers present among the military and firefighters. Since Friday night, the police have been on guard behind the parliament fence and have not entered the area where the protest is taking place.

The call to prayer for dawn (Azan subuh) was heard at 04:38 AM. Some road users, such as taxis and vegetable vendors on motorcycles, began to pass through Gatot Subroto Street in front of the DPR, which had been closed by the protesters. Some vehicles turned back upon seeing the crowd and hearing the sound of firecrackers or tear gas.

In addition to the DPR, protesters also took to the streets at several other locations on Friday, August 29, 2025, including at the Mobile Brigade Headquarters (Mako Brimob) in Kwitang, Jakarta, and the Jakarta Metro Police Office on Jenderal Sudirman Street. Apart from Jakarta, protests were also held in other cities such as Makassar, Bandung, and Yogyakarta.

The protests were triggered by the death of Affan Kurniawan, an ojol driver who was killed after being run over by a police tactical vehicle. The incident occurred during the demonstration in Jakarta, which lasted until Monday night, August 28, 2025.

Up to now, the police have detained and questioned seven members of Brimob who are suspected of being involved in the death of Affan. They are being detained for 20 days while awaiting an ethics trial.

Affan Kurniawan was buried in the Karet Bivak Public Cemetery, Central Jakarta, on Friday, August 29, 2025, around 10:30 AM. Thousands of people wearing ojol jackets followed the funeral procession of Affan. Among the mourners are Anies Baswedan, Jusuf Hamka, Rieke Diah Pitaloka, and the Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Inspector General Asep Edi.
