Jakarta Suffers Second Blackout in a Month, Here's Why

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Power outages suddenly hit parts of Jakarta today, Thursday, April 23, 2026. State-owned electricity company, PT PLN, attributed the blackout to power supply disruptions.

"Power supply disruptions have affected several areas in Jakarta. PLN is working to restore normalcy," Haris Andika, Senior Manager of Communications and General Affairs at PLN UID Jakarta Raya, told Antara in Jakarta on Thursday.

Haris asked Jakarta residents to report the condition of electricity services in their respective areas through the PLN Mobile app and the PLN 123 Contact Center.

Social media has been flooded with complaints of power outages today, reporting blackouts across Jakarta, including office districts.

According to Antara's observation, power outages occurred in several parts of Central Jakarta, such as Thamrin and Bendungan Hilir; South Jakarta, such as Kuningan, Jagakarsa, and Tebet; and other areas, such as East Jakarta.

Second Blackout in April

Sudden power outage also hit several parts of Jakarta earlier this month on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

At the time, PLN announced that the disruption originated from a system fault at several substations, which caused a temporary power outage in the affected areas.

In response to this situation, PLN said it was moving swiftly to restore normalcy by deploying personnel to the affected sites.

The restoration process was carried out in phases to ensure the electricity system was stable and safe before returning power to customers.

The outage temporarily affected MRT services, with operational disruptions at several stations on Thursday afternoon, at 5:57 p.m. local time.
