Japan Captain Wataru Endo on Indonesia Match: We Are the Strongest Team

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wataru Endo, the captain of the Japan national team, affirmed his team's ambition to prove themselves as the strongest in Group C standings as they prepare to host the Indonesian national team at the Suita City Stadium, Osaka Prefecture, on Tuesday, June 10.

Japan and Indonesia will play the closing match of Group C's Asian qualifier for the 2026 World Cup, in a match that no longer determines the fate of both teams in the standings.

"This is the last match (in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers). I want to convey the message that we are the strongest team. As a team, we will enjoy it," said Endo in the press conference before the match on Monday.

Endo also admitted that the 0-1 defeat to Australia last week had put pressure on the Japanese squad. However, he asserted that the match against Indonesia will be a moment of revival.

"Indeed, we felt pressured after losing to Australia. But tomorrow, against Indonesia, we want to show that our level continues to improve," said the Liverpool player.

Japan is expected to field some new players in the upcoming match. In the match against Australia, the Blue Samurai team also gave the opportunity to some new players to make their debut.

Wataru Endo mentioned that their performance in training sessions was very positive and will bring fresh energy to the game. "Many new players performed very well. We will showcase the best through them, and continue to practice as a team," he said.

The Japanese national team has already secured a spot in the final round of the 2026 World Cup, while the Garuda team has also locked in a ticket to the fourth round of World Cup qualifiers.
