Morocco's Gen Z Leads Eight Days of Protests over Poor Health and Education Systems

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Generation Z in Morocco has staged demonstrations for eight consecutive days as of Saturday, calling for improvements in the country’s public health and education systems.

The protests, launched by GenZ 212, an online youth collective boasting more than 180,000 members on Discord, have been largely peaceful and grounded in the group’s commitment to non-violent action.

The rare wave of dissent in the typically stable North African nation has challenged perceptions that Moroccan youth are disengaged from politics. Since last Saturday, GenZ 212 has organized coordinated protests across several cities through online calls to action.

In Tetouan, hundreds of demonstrators chanted slogans such as The people want an end to corruption and Freedom, dignity and social justice,” according to local media.

In Casablanca, protesters demanded “education and health for the people,” while in Rabat, dozens gathered in front of parliament, as reported by France24.

The group’s anonymous founder had earlier urged members on Discord to hold peaceful demonstrations in 14 cities between 06:00 PM and 09:00 PM, demanding reforms to social services, the eradication of corruption, and the resignation of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, whose term ends next year.

Protests continued into Friday night, drawing hundreds in Rabat, Agadir, and other urban centers. However, earlier in the week, several small towns witnessed clashes that turned deadly. Authorities reported that three people were killed by police “in legitimate defense” after allegedly attempting to storm a police station in Lqliaa, near Agadir.

Despite the unrest, GenZ 212 has reiterated its stance on non-violence, and demonstrations have remained mostly calm since then.

The latest protests follow a separate wave of demonstrations that erupted in mid-September, after reports that eight pregnant women died during caesarean operations at a public hospital in Agadir.

The incident further inflamed public anger over the poor state of Morocco’s healthcare system and deepening social inequalities.

For many young Moroccans, these tragedies have become a symbol of systemic neglect—and a rallying point for a generation demanding dignity, accountability, and reform.
