TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Semeru in East Java has recorded 11 eruptions throughout the day, up until Sunday afternoon, May 25, 2025. The volcanic ash column from the eruptions was observed to reach up to 1,200 meters above the summit.
Ghufron Alwi, an officer at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA), reported that the 1.2-kilometer-high eruption occurred at 06:46 AM local time. "The height of the eruption column was observed to be approximately 1,200 meters above the summit, or around 4,876 meters above sea level," said Ghufron in a report written from the observation post located at Mount Sawur, Sumber Wuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency.
Ghufron stated that the ash column appeared white to gray with thick intensity, moving toward the southeast and south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and lasted for 137 seconds.
Meanwhile, seismic observations over the past 24 hours up to early Sunday morning indicated 42 volcanic quakes with amplitudes ranging from 12 to 22 mm and durations between 55 and 260 seconds. There were also reports of 7 emission quakes with amplitudes of 4 to 8 mm and durations of 33 to 75 seconds.
The Semeru Observation Post also reported 4 harmonic tremors with amplitudes between 3 and 10 mm and durations of 100 to 219 seconds. Additionally, one local tectonic quake was recorded with a 25 mm amplitude, a 10-second S-P interval, and a duration of 45 seconds. Five distant tectonic quakes were also noted.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), under the Geological Agency, stated that Mount Semeru’s activity level remains at Level II or Alert. At this alert level, PVMBG recommends, among other things, avoiding any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 kilometers from the summit (eruption center).
Beyond that distance, people are advised not to carry out any activity within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan.
This is due to the potential spread of pyroclastic flows and cold lava floods reaching up to 13 kilometers from the summit. In addition, no activity is allowed within a 3-kilometer radius of the crater or summit of Mount Semeru due to the risk of ejected hot rocks.
The public is also urged to remain alert for potential pyroclastic flows, lava avalanches, and lahars along rivers or valleys that originate from the summit of Mount Semeru, particularly along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the risk of lahars in smaller rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
