Pentagon: U.S. War in Iran Costs US$25 Billion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Senior Pentagon officials reported on Wednesday that the United States' war in Iran has reached $25 billion, approximately Rp434 trillion, as the conflict approaches its 60th day. This represents the first official estimate of military expenditures for the conflict, as reported by NBC News.

Jules Hurst, the Pentagon's chief financial officer, testified at a House Armed Services Committee hearing alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Dan Caine.

Hurst informed members of the committee that the majority of the funding has been allocated toward munitions. "Approximately, of this day, we're spending about $25 billion on Operation Epic Fury," Hurst told the committee's senior Democrat, Adam Smith.

However, Hurst stopped short of detailing the exact components of the cost estimate. He also failed to clarify whether the figure accounted for the projected costs of rebuilding and repairing Middle Eastern base infrastructure damaged during the hostilities.

Legislative Frustration over Transparency

During a question-and-answer session, Smith pointed out that the Pentagon had failed to provide Congress with updated information regarding the war's financial toll since its onset. "I'm glad you answered that question. Because we've been asking for a hell of a long time, and no one's given us the number," Smith remarked.

Smith then inquired whether the Department of Defense intended to request additional funding from Congress to sustain the ongoing conflict.

"We will formulate a supplemental, through the White House, that will come to Congress once we have a full assessment of the cost of the conflict," Hurst replied.

Later on Wednesday evening, Hurst promised to provide lawmakers with a detailed breakdown of the $25 billion expenditure following a query from Representative Maggie Goodlander.

"That just reflects the costs of the war. So we’ve already spent the dollars on munitions and things like that, so we’re factoring in costs of munitions expended in that total," Hurst stated.

This total, he added, "reflects the munitions that have been spent to date and other operational costs."

The explanation drew sharp criticism from Goodlander, who addressed Hegseth directly. "We are 60 days in to your war of choice in Iran and you can’t give us an answer on the basic breakdown of American taxpayer dollars that have been spent?"

The U.S. war in Iran has forced the Republican Party, supporters of President Donald Trump, into a grueling struggle to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives. This political pressure comes just six months ahead of the midterm elections in November 2026.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party is currently leading in public opinion polls as they attempt to bridge the gap between the unpopular war in Iran and the nation's capacity to finance it.
