TEMPO.COJakarta - Police stationed at the Mobile Brigade Command Headquarters (Mako Brimob) in Kwitang, Central Jakarta, fired tear gas at demonstrators this Friday morning, August 29, 2025, at 8:50 a.m. WIB. Dozens of shots were heard, causing the crowd to scatter toward the Senen intersection flyover.

Several protesters, ranging from young people to middle-aged motorcycle taxi (ojek online) drivers, were seen collapsing and coughing, some left unable to speak. "Water, water, water," one weakened protester was heard saying.

Other protesters who also felt the stinging effects immediately provided assistance, offering water and bread to those who had collapsed. The crowd dispersed briefly to wait for the effects of the tear gas to subside before regrouping.

Shortly after, the protesters approached Mako Brimob again and were met with up to four more tear gas shots. In response, protesters threw firecrackers toward the police barricade.

Protesters had been gathering at Mako Brimob since early this morning. The Chair of the National Ojol Coalition Presidium, Andi Kristiyanto, stated that the motorcycle taxi drivers were there due to the death of a colleague who was run over by a police tactical vehicle on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.

In addition to protesting at Mako Brimob, Andi mentioned that drivers were also gathering at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital to visit the deceased victim. "They are demanding that the police, especially Brimob, be held accountable," Andi said on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.

Exchanges of fire have been ongoing since early this morning. At around 12:10 a.m. WIB, a group of police on motorcycles dispersed the crowd to the west side of Mako Brimob, but they regrouped shortly after.
