Prabowo Approves Rp200bn Aid for Bekasi Flyover After Train Crash

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will give out hundreds of billions of rupiah in assistance for flyover construction in Bekasi following a train collision that killed at least 15 late Monday, according to Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad.

The Bekasi government had previously proposed to build a flyover to address the traffic near the railway crossing in the Bulak Kapal area, but was blocked by budget constraints.

"I told Pak President [Prabowo] this and asked for Presidential Assistance, which, Alhamdulillah, he approved for Rp200 billion," he said when contacted on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

The flyover is expected to be completed within the next four to five months.

Citing Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto Tjahyono, Dasco explained that the overpass at the railway crossing is projected to prevent up to 90 percent of accidents.

"The Mayor of Bekasi said the train accident where it crashed into a taxi was triggered by congestion in two places, Bekasi City and Bekasi Regency," he said.

The accident started when the KRL train was stopping at track 1 of Bekasi Timur Station, due to collision with a taxi. Shortly after, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train appeared from behind and directly collided with the train. The collision severely damaged the women-only car, killing at least 15—all of whom were women—and injuring 88 others.

Prabowo has expressed his intention to provide assistance for the construction of a flyover at the railroad crossing, stating that many lack adequate safety mechanisms.

"I have approved the immediate construction of the flyover, directly through Presidential aid," he said while visiting the accident victims at the Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Bekasi City, West Java, on Tuesday morning.
