TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto has pledged to make generic medicines more affordable in Indonesia, saying his administration aims to begin providing low-cost generic drugs to the public within the next year.
Speaking during the inauguration of the KH Muhammad Thohir Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Krui, Lampung, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Prabowo said access to affordable medicines is a key part of the government's effort to improve healthcare services nationwide.
“We will strive to provide medicines to the people at the lowest possible prices,” he said, according to a statement from the Presidential Secretariat.
Prabowo said expanding the availability of generic medicines would be one way to reduce healthcare costs. “I hope that within a year, we can begin providing affordable generic medicines to the public,” he said.
The president also highlighted the government's ongoing healthcare modernization program. He said nearly 1,000 units of modern medical equipment have been distributed to hospitals across Indonesia's 514 regencies and cities.
During the hospital inauguration, Prabowo expressed hope that the facility would consistently provide quality services to local residents.
“I also stress that there must be no misuse of authority and no corruption in serving the people,” the former army general said.
Prabowo added that his administration plans to renovate between 350 and 400 hospitals across the country while upgrading 10,000 community health centers (Puskesmas).
Improving healthcare services is among the government's priority "quick win" programs. Presidential Chief of Staff Teddy Indra Wijaya said the government aims to enhance services at 66 regional public hospitals in Indonesia's underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost regions.
According to Teddy, 20 of the 22 targeted hospitals for 2025 have been completed, with 10 already in operation. In 2026, construction has begun on four of the 20 hospitals scheduled for development.
“Meanwhile, 24 regional hospitals are still in the planning stage for 2027,” Teddy said in a written statement issued on Wednesday.
