TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to inaugurate 21 regional general hospitals (RSUD) whose quality will be upgraded in May. The government will upgrade these 21 hospitals from type D and D primary to type C.
Head of the Government Communication Bureau, Muhammad Qodari, explained that improving the quality of these regional hospitals is part of the government's "quick win" program for the healthcare sector. These 21 hospitals will have basic specialist services and larger service capacities.
"Twenty-one hospitals are ready to be inaugurated by the President, planned for May 2026," said Qodari in a statement on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Qodari assured that all regional hospitals will be equipped with seven basic specialist doctors covering pediatricians, surgeons, anesthetists, internists, obstetricians and gynecologists (obgyn), radiologists, and clinical pathologists. Additionally, the government plans to provide facilities for operating rooms, outpatient care, inpatient care, radiology, and pharmacy.
According to Qodari, these 21 hospitals are among the 66 regional general hospitals that will be improved from 2025 to 2027. This includes 22 regional hospitals in 2025, 20 in 2026, and 24 units in 2027.
Qodari stated that the focus of this quality improvement is on hospitals in underdeveloped, border, and island areas. With this program, he hopes that residents in these areas can access specialist polyclinic services more easily.
He emphasized that people will no longer need to be referred to major cities for complex medical cases. "This means that people in these areas no longer need to travel far just to receive specialist services," Qodari said.
On the other hand, Qodari claimed that the program to improve the quality of these regional general hospitals not only expands access to healthcare services but also has economic benefits.
For example, in terms of employment, Qodari estimated that the improvement of 66 regional general hospitals can accommodate 20,000 to 33,000 workers, based on an average requirement of 300 to 500 healthcare and non-healthcare workers per hospital.
In addition, patients from underdeveloped, border, and island areas are said to be able to access quality healthcare services closer to their homes. As a result, patients will no longer need to spend a large amount on transportation to be referred to city hospitals.
"The transportation costs for patients from underdeveloped, border, and island areas who need to be referred to major city hospitals can reach Rp2 to Rp10 million per visit, not including accommodation and loss of income while unable to work," said Qodari. "With the availability of quality regional general hospitals near their homes, this burden can be significantly reduced."
