TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa plans to impose export duties on gold jewelry exceeding specified weight thresholds. This regulatory tightening aims to curb duty evasion schemes that have emerged since gold export duties took effect in December 2025.
According to Purbaya, certain exporters circumvent existing tariffs by converting raw gold into jewelry. "We will tighten rules by revising the Finance Ministry Regulation (PMK) so that jewelry of a certain weight will also be subject to export tax," he told a press conference at the Soekarno-Hatta Customs and Excise Office in Tangerang on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The Finance Minister noted that gold smuggling has surged since the implementation of export duties. He suspects the illicit shipments are tied to unlicensed gold mining operations, locally known as PETI.
Purbaya added that these evasion tactics have slashed government revenue from gold export duties to near zero. "Because of export duties, there are almost no gold exports through standard routes. So, if we look at state revenue from it, it's almost zero," he explained.
The Directorate General of Customs and Excise recently foiled two gold smuggling attempts at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on August 11, 2026. Across both busts, authorities intercepted a total of 23.79 kilograms of gold valued at an estimated Rp63 billion.
Purbaya noted that the perpetrators in the two cases employed different smuggling tactics. In the first case, couriers concealed the gold in various ways, including inserting it into their genitals and anus. In the second scheme, the gold was funneled through restricted airport operational zones with the help of ground handling staff.
