TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The son of Ramzan Kadyrov, leader of Russia’s Chechen region and a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, has been appointed secretary of the region’s security council, according to the council’s Telegram channel.
As reported by Al Arabiya on Wednesday, Adam Kadyrov turned 17 in November 2024. This marks the fourth time he has been appointed to an official position since 2023, when he was 15 years old.
He has previously served as his father’s personal bodyguard, a trustee at the Chechen Special Forces University, and an observer in a newly formed military battalion.
Ramzan Kadyrov has led Chechnya since 2007. The region, located in the mountainous south of Russia and predominantly Muslim, sought independence from Moscow during the war that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Kadyrov has been granted broad authority by Putin to govern Chechnya as his personal domain. This arrangement has been seen as a reward for his efforts to maintain stability in the region, which experienced a prolonged anti-Russian insurgency for nearly a decade after the end of major conflict there in the early 2000s.
Ramzan's rise to power came after the death of his own father, Akhmat, who was killed in a bombing in 2004 carried out by Chechen rebels who viewed him as a traitor.
In September 2023, Adam Kadyrov was seen in a video, posted by his father on social media, beating a detainee accused of burning the Quran. Ramzan Kadyrov expressed pride in his son for defending the Muslim faith.
The detainee, Nikita Zhuravel, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison.
