TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Colombian singer Shakira and Nigerian Afrobeats musician Burna Boy enlivened the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Thursday, with an energetic performance that marked the start of the world's biggest football event.
As reported by ANTARA, in the opening ceremony broadcast to various countries, Shakira appeared striking, wearing a bright yellow dress combined with a white skirt.
He appeared in the middle of the field with dozens of dancers wearing white and yellow costumes, while a giant replica of the World Cup Trophy stood majestically in the center of the arena. The performance became even more lively when Burna Boy joined the stage.
The two performed Dai Dai, the official song of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which blends Shakira's signature Latin music with Burna Boy's signature Afrobeats. The song is the official song of the tournament and was performed live for the first time at the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup.
Throughout the performance, the dancers form various choreographic patterns around a giant replica trophy.
One of the moments that captured the audience's attention was when the mass choreography formed the words "We Are Ready," which illustrated the readiness of the host and participants to welcome the four-yearly tournament.
The stadium atmosphere became even livelier when the participating countries' flag parade took place. The flag bearers entered the field in waves, carrying the banners of each country toward the center of the stadium. This created a colorful scene, met with cheers from the spectators in the stands.
According to FIFA's official broadcast, Mexico opened the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an unprecedented opening ceremony. The show lasts 90 minutes before the opening match and is the start of a series of three opening ceremonies that will also be held in Canada and the United States.
Besides Shakira and Burna Boy, several world musicians also became the main performers, namely Alejandro Fernandez, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Angeles Azules, Mana, and Tyla.
The artists performed songs from the Official FIFA World Cup 2026 Album, which served as the soundtrack to this year's tournament. FIFA named Dai Dai as the official song of the 2026 World Cup, conveying the spirit of football, culture and unity through a blend of musical energy.
