South Korea Invites Indonesia to Join KF-21 Fighter Jet Supply Chain

2 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) hoped that PT Dirgantara Indonesia (DI) could become part of the supply chain for the KF-21 Boramae fighter jet, a joint development project between South Korea and Indonesia.

As reported by ANTARA, this statement was delivered by Team Leader International Business Development, Asia Team 2, KAI, Park Seonghee, to Indonesian journalists at the “Indonesian Next-Generation Journalist Network” event held by the Korea Foundation and the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia in Sacheon, South Korea, Thursday, June 11.

He said the company aims to further expand the partnership and hopes PT DI will become a key strategic partner, playing an important role in its global supply chain.

Park stated that KAI and PT DI have signed a strategic cooperation agreement in the defense sector. The agreement covers not only the KF-21 program, but also the KT-1B basic trainer aircraft and various rotary aircraft programs.

Park explained that the KF-21, one of six prototypes to be delivered to Indonesia, has garnered significant interest from potential customers. Several countries have even begun discussions regarding the program.

Park said the company is considering relocating the KT-1 production line to Indonesia, allowing local manufacturing facilities to support future export programs and expand production opportunities.

On the same occasion, KAI's Director of International Business Development for Asia, Jo Junhyun, said that KAI is currently carrying out a program to strengthen the KT-1B aircraft structure, and that PT DI has carried out most of the work.

Regarding the KF-21, one of the six prototypes of which has been agreed to be sent to Indonesia, KAI hopes that the Indonesian government will later procure 48 aircraft.

Jo said current discussions are centered on the first phase of cooperation, but talks have also broadened to include the potential future procurement of additional KF-21 aircraft. He emphasized the company's strong commitment to deepening and expanding its partnership with Indonesia in the years ahead.

In 2015, South Korea launched a project to develop a domestically made supersonic fighter jet. Indonesia joined the project as a partner, agreeing to a cost-sharing scheme in exchange for technology transfer, prototypes, and other provisions.

The Defense Acquisition Program Agency is expected to establish a timeline for transferring the prototype and associated technology documents once Indonesia has paid its 600 billion won (Rp6.8 trillion) contribution to the joint fighter jet project.

As a partner country, Indonesia initially agreed to contribute around 20 percent of the total project cost, but later proposed reducing its contribution to six percent in exchange for a reduction in the level of technology transfer.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Seoul has been negotiating with Jakarta to sign an export deal for 16 KF-21 fighter jets. This would be the first overseas sale of the domestically made fighter jet.
