Strait of Hormuz Oil Trade by Country: 5 Nations Most at Risk of Disruption

12 hours ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For multiple decades, the Straits of Hormuz has been one of the world’s most pivotal energy chokepoints, handling the largest crude oil tankers. With the escalation of the strained relationship between the U.S. and Iran, many countries are vulnerable to oil shortage, as there are very few alternative options currently.

As the world is shaken by the impending war, investors have been closely monitoring the hefty needs of oil trade by country. To make it easier, Visual Capitalist and eia revealed the list of nations who heavily rely on oil traffic through the Straits of Hormuz.

List of Oil Trade by Country through the Straits of Hormuz

1. China

For many years, the Strait of Hormuz has been consistently acting as the critical checkpoint for China’s energy resource. While it seems that everything is made in China, this formidable nation reportedly received 37.7% shares of the oil imports from the Straits of Hormuz, making its position susceptible during the ongoing conflicts.

2. India

In second place, India has a relatively wide gap from China. According to Visual Capitalist, the nation seized 14.7% of oil and condensate imports through the Straits of Hormuz just in the first quarter of 2025. The entire country is said to take 2.09 million barrels per day.

3. South Korea

At 12% of shares, South Korea is officially named as the top Asian country to ever depend their energy measure on the Straits of Hormuz. With its imports of oil and condensate touching the base of 1.7 million barrels per day, the nation will be severely affected by the dispute.

4. Japan

By the first quarter of 2025, Japan imported 10.9% of oil shares from the Straits of Hormuz, which further put its vocation at risk during the war. Every day, the people of Japan and its government took 1.55 million barrels from the Straits.

5. United States

Despite its bravery as the initiator, the United States is actually among the biggest importers from the Strait of Hormuz. Latest data read the robust nation claimed 2.5% shares of oil and condensate imports from the now closed strait.

On a daily basis last year, the United States recorded 0.36 million barrels of imported oil.

As tensions continue to shape global energy security, understanding the oil trade from the strait of Hormuz by country highlights how deeply many major economies rely on this passage. Any disruption could quickly ripple through global markets, affecting supply chains, prices, and national energy strategies.
