TEMPO.CO, Jakarta On Saturday, February 28, 2026, between 2 and 3am, Ali Mahmud—not his real name—felt the thuds from his home in Tehran. The blasts were loud but not startling. The Indonesian citizen woke up at 4:30am, opened his cellphone, and discovered shocking news that the rumbling he heard earlier came from missiles launched by the United States and Israel.

The predawn explosions marked the opening wave of a military offensive by the United States and Israel against Iran. The attacks targeted government offices, military and Revolutionary Guard headquarters, and nuclear facilities. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed at his home along with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Several senior Iranian officials also died. Hours later, more than 100 children died after a missile struck a girls’ elementary school in Minab, a city in southern Iran.

Ali said Tehran came under missile attack again around 9am. “They arrived in bursts lasting about 10 to 15 minutes, stopped, then came again,” he told Tempo by phone on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

According to Ali, some Iranians had already anticipated an attack by the United States and Israel. The rhetoric of US President Donald Trump had increasingly cornered Iran over its nuclear program and what he called an oppressive regime. A day before the assault, Trump announced plans for the United States to strike Iran. Washington said the aim was to eliminate nuclear threats, combat global terrorism, and end repression against the Iranian people. What remained uncertain at the time was when the attack would begin.
