Thousands of Migrants Hide Across Ceuta to Avoid Deportation to Morocco

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Illegal migrants entering Ceuta, Spain’s autonomous enclave in North Africa, are reportedly hiding in a range of locations to avoid being deported to Morocco.

According to a RIA Novosti correspondent as cited by Antara on Saturday, migrants have been found sheltering under bridges, on rooftops, along beaches, in parks, inside sewers, and in other concealed areas.

Hundreds of migrants are still believed to be in coastal areas and on roads near the border. They are moving in small groups, making it difficult for security forces to locate and detain everyone.

Although Spain has increased the number of security personnel in the enclave, the number of migrants on the streets and along the coastline is reportedly far greater than the patrols deployed.

Many of the migrants appeared exhausted and were carrying only small bags containing dry food. Some approached passersby to ask for food or money.

Local residents have also begun avoiding the coastal area around the Tarajal border crossing, where tensions remain high.

In late July, Ceuta experienced a sharp surge in migrant arrivals from Morocco. Ceuta Mayor Juan Jesus Vivas said on Friday that about 60,000 people entered the territory within a 24-hour period.

The influx triggered unrest in several parts of the enclave. In response, the Spanish government deployed additional police officers, Civil Guard personnel, and military forces to reinforce security.

Ceuta is a Spanish enclave on the northern coast of Africa that shares a land border with Morocco. Together with Melilla, it forms the European Union’s only land border with Africa and has long been one of the main entry points for irregular migration into Europe.
