TNI Replaces BAIS Chief over Andrie Yunus Acid Attack Case

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has confirmed that the Chief of the Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS), Lieutenant General Yudi Abrimantyo, has handed over his position. Major General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah, head of the TNI Information Center, stated that this leadership change is a consequence of the acid attack on human rights activist Andrie Yunus.

"As a form of accountability, the handover of the Chief of BAIS position was carried out today," Nasrullah said at TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

The two-star general stopped short of detailing the leadership shuffle, including the identity of the senior officer appointed to replace Yudi.

Yudi Abrimantyo has served as the Chief of BAIS TNI since March 2024. He is a 1989 Military Academy graduate and a member of the Special Forces (Kopassus).

Previously, Andrie Yunus, who frequently criticizes the TNI Law and the expansion of the military's role in civilian spaces, was attacked with acid on Salemba I-Talang Street, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, March 12, 2026.

Andrie was doused with a harmful solution by two unidentified individuals on a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

The corrosive liquid affected the right side of Andrie's body, including his eyes, face, chest, and hands. Some of the victim's clothes melted as a result of the attack.

Medical results showed that Andrie suffered serious burns covering 24 percent of his body. Currently, Andrie is still undergoing treatment at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital (RSCM).

The police and TNI have produced different investigation results regarding the suspects. The Jakarta Metro Police stated there were two perpetrators with the initials BHC and MAK.

Meanwhile, the TNI revealed that four suspects were involved in the attack. The four include Captain NDP, First Lieutenant SL, First Lieutenant BHW, and Second Sergeant ES.

The TNI Military Police Center claimed that the four suspects were detained on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. TNI Spokesman Aulia stated that the investigation into the attack against the Deputy Coordinator of Kontras is ongoing.

"Please wait until the entire investigation process by the investigators from TNI Military Police is completed," said Aulia in a previous statement.
