TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Speaker of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Eddy Suparno, discussed the potential development of nuclear energy with President's Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, and former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. According to Eddy, Tony Blair, who now heads the Tony Blair Institute, presented the development of nuclear technology in the UK.
"Tony Blair said that the UK has developed a relatively compact modular nuclear power technology, with a capacity ranging from 300 to 500 megawatts," Eddy said at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Jakarta.
Eddy stated that this modular nuclear technology is suitable for archipelagic countries like Indonesia. He added that the technology will be further introduced and that the Indonesian government is still awaiting further explanations from the British company recommended by Tony Blair.
The government hopes to learn more about how nuclear technology can be adopted in Indonesia. According to Eddy, the government has not yet determined the location for the development of this alternative energy source.
However, Eddy mentioned that based on research conducted so far, West Kalimantan and Bangka Belitung are the preferred locations for the construction of nuclear power plants.
"But the certainty of the development we will see later. Because the RUPTL (Electricity Supply Business Plan) 2025-2034 is still in the process of completion," he said.
The RUPTL includes a provision for the development of a 1-gigawatt nuclear power plant, marking the incipient phase of nuclear energy development in Indonesia.
By 2038, renewable energy sources in Java are predicted to be depleted. Consequently, according to Eddy, nuclear energy emerges as a critical alternative to address the nation's energy needs.
The government recently issued the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministerial Regulation No. 10 of 2025 concerning the Roadmap for the Energy Transition in the Electricity Sector. The development of nuclear power plants is one of the transition methods stipulated by the government in the regulation. According to the regulation, the development of nuclear power plants must meet safety and security requirements in accordance with the provisions of the laws and regulations.
