TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Extreme weather swept across several areas in West Java, Indonesia, on Sunday, October 5, 2025, bringing a tornado to Bandung Regency and hailstorms to parts of Bogor.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) through its West Java Climatology Station confirmed the incidents.
Head of the Bandung Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Wahyudin, said several houses sustained roof damage following the tornado that struck the Bojongsoang area.
“Damage assessments are ongoing today to determine the severity of the impact on each affected house,” Wahyudin told Tempo on Monday, October 6, 2025.
Preliminary data from BPBD recorded 49 houses damaged in Kampung Cijagra RW 09 and 10, Bojongsoang Village. One resident, Arinah (68), was injured after being hit by falling roof tiles and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Several other houses in Kampung Ciganitri RW 08–11, Lengkong Village, were also affected by strong winds moving from south to north, shattering rooftops and scattering debris.
BMKG West Java weather forecaster Perdana Reynaldy Augus Usior said that from October 6–12, 2025, rain intensity across parts of West Java will remain influenced by multiple factors, including active low-frequency atmospheric waves and relatively warm sea surface temperatures around Indonesian waters.
“Atmospheric instability is currently in the mild to strong category, indicating potential for the formation of local convective clouds,” Perdana said in a written statement on Sunday.
BMKG warned that moderate to very heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and strong winds, could still occur locally and briefly on Monday, October 6, in Bekasi Regency and City, Depok, Bogor Regency, Cianjur, Sukabumi, Kuningan, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Pangandaran.
The agency further forecast that on Tuesday, October 7, extreme weather may hit Sukabumi and Garut, followed by similar conditions in Cianjur and Bandung Regencies on Wednesday, October 8.
