TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump is considering delaying the implementation of reciprocal tariffs against almost all of his trading partners. However, he decided to increase tariffs on China to 125 percent.
As quoted from the Instagram account @whitehouse, in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, Trump said he will increase the U.S.'s tariffs on China to 125 percent because of China's lack of respect for the global market. He hopes China will realize its mistake in 'cheating' the U.S. and other countries.
He mentioned that the suspension of implementing import tariffs will last for 90 days. The postponement policy is given to more than 75 countries, but reciprocal tariffs will still be decreased to a minimum of 10 percent.
Trump mentioned that he has authorized the suspension of implementing new customs duties for 90 days. During this period, reciprocal tariffs will be substantially reduced by 10 percent, take effect immediately.
He explained that he decided to postpone the meeting because of several countries' enthusiasm to negotiate with the United States. He revealed that delegations from more than 75 countries have met with the United States, including the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
Trump said more than 75 countries have called for US representatives, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Treasury, and USTR, to negotiate solutions for the subjects discussed.
He stated that these countries did not attempt retaliatory actions like China. He said over 75 countries negotiated with the U.S. to discuss various issues, such as trade problems, trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs.
On the same day, China had previously announced an increase in levies on imported products from the U.S., raising additional tariffs to 84 percent, following Trump's retaliatory increase in tariffs on Chinese imports from 34 percent to 50 percent.
China urged the U.S. to immediately rectify its illegal actions, revoke all unilateral tariff policies against it, and properly resolve the dispute through equal and respectful discussions.
